"I vividly remember segregation-separate schools, sitting in the balcony at the movie theater, being barred from the public swimming pool," notes Steward, who was among a small group of African-American high-school students who integrated the public swimming pool in Clinton in 1967. As a child growing up in Clinton, Steward faced poverty and discrimination. In 1953, the family moved to Clinton, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family.Steward was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Dorothy Elizabeth Massingale (1928-2020), a homemaker, and Harold Lloyd Steward (1925-1999), a mechanic. Gary was a devoted father and grandfather, and the love he had for his family was palpable. Surviving are his children, Tyler and Caitlin Steward, Savannah and Cody Yount, Corinne Steward and Steven Moss his grandchildren, Lola Yount, Aubree Moss, Coco Yount, Cash Yount, Henry Steward, and soon to be born grandson, Thomas Steward his sister, Viki LaCross, step-mother, Sandy Steward, and niece and nephew, Faith and Caleb Simonye. and Jeanette Englehart-Duvernois, his sister, Sharri Steward, brother, Scott Steward, and grandparents, Howard and Thelma Steward. He was preceded in death by his parents Gary Steward Sr. Gary was born in Flint, Michigan on September 19, 1962. Burial will follow at Flint Memorial Park, 9506 N Dort Hwy. This will be held at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Rd, with Pastor Chip Collins officiating. and goes until the time of the funeral service at 12 Noon.
